Uni-span secures largest private construction deal in Australia for single tower

Uni-span once again proved it is a national leader in scaffolding design and co-ordination when it secured the supply scaffolding and labour contract in the largest private construction deal ever awarded in Australia for a single tower development.

The $850million, 77-floor Soul residential tower and retail outlets in Surfers Paradise is a major new project developed by the Juniper Group due for completion mid-2011. Located in the heart of Surfers Paradise at Cavil Mall, Soul throws up many unique challenges for the builders, Grocon Pty Ltd. Uni-span was awarded the contract for its willingness to work harmoniously alongside Grocon to solve all safety and access concerns during construction.

The primary scaffolding challenge was to protect the public and maintain free pedestrian access to the popular esplanade precinct of Surfers Paradise during construction. Uni-span provided a cantilevered scaffold that allowed for both construction and pedestrian traffic to continue safely. When faced with the task of ensuring safe and convenient vehicle access to the site, Uni-span addressed this issue by employing expert operators to use modern delivery vehicles.

Uni-span also worked with the Grocon team to specifically engineer and design new cantilevered scaffold solutions to be erected over the existing buildings within the retail precinct, along with support scaffolds for temporary access bridges linking the eastern and western scaffolds of the retail precinct.

One of the trickier construction challenges involved the lift pit overrun for the tower, which required scaffold to be erected to an extremely tight area. This required careful crane co-ordination by the skilled Uni-span scaffold labour team. Once the poured walls are completed the next test will be to remove the scaffold within the confined space. Uni-span will again work closely with the site team to ensure this task is completed safely and successfully.
